The Ultimate Guide to Stain Removal: Coffee, Ink, and Wine

Whether it’s a splash of morning coffee on your crisp white shirt, a leaking pen in your pocket, or a spill of red wine during dinner, stains can feel like a disaster. However, with the right approach and quick action, most stains can be treated and completely removed without damaging the fabric.
The golden rule of stain removal is speed. The longer a stain sits, the more it bonds with the fibers, making it significantly harder to remove. Always blot the stain immediately with a clean cloth—never rub it, as rubbing spreads the liquid and pushes it deeper into the fabric.
For coffee stains, flush the area with cold water from the back of the fabric to push the stain out. Apply a few drops of liquid laundry detergent and rub gently, then let it sit for five minutes before washing. If the stain persists, a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water can help break down the organic compounds.
Ink stains require alcohol. Place a paper towel under the stain and dab it with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer using a cotton swab. The alcohol dissolves the ink pigments, transferring them to the paper towel beneath. Rinse thoroughly and wash normally.
Red wine is notorious, but it can be neutralized. Cover the stain immediately with salt or baking soda to absorb the liquid. After ten minutes, brush off the powder and flush the area with club soda or cold water. If it remains, apply a mixture of liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide, let it sit for a few minutes, then wash.
Remember to always check the fabric care label before applying any cleaning agents, and never put a stained garment in the dryer, as heat will permanently set the stain.
